*AFW (Away From my Workstation)*

The Keeper of the Blog will be away on a business trip and will be offline from Nov. 25-Dec.2.  Yes, I know, I’m gonna miss seeing Neil tomorrow (or should I say “later”, since it’s currently 2:46 a.m. of November 25 and I’m still in the office rushing some training manuals).

If you come across any interesting articles or photos or videos or recordings or blog posts or any material at all about Neil’s visit that I haven’t linked or posted about yet, please please do leave a note and a URL in the comments.

To those who will be at the Philippine Graphic/Fiction Awards: enjoy the event, and if you can, give Mr. Neil a hug from me (unless you’re a guy, in which case, a handshake will probably do).  *wink wink*  :D

Delightful dreams!

Article: “SciFi novelist dares Filipino writers to dream”

Ansbert Joaquin of the Philippine Daily Inquirer writes from the Ad Congress:

Despite coming across various works of art from across the globe, however, the acclaimed writer admits he is charmed with Philippine folklore.

The Philippines has the “coolest folklores in the world,” he said.

But he challenged writers to bring such literary gems to the world as the trend today is moving towards global acceptance.

“If you guys won’t do it, I will,” he said.

“Expeditions” available at the Ad Congress

Charles is currently at the Ad Congress, and he is reporting that Expeditions is already available there:

Volume 1: Comics (110 pages) –  Softcover, PhP600; Hardcover, PhP900

Volume 2: Prose (190 pages) — Softcover, PhP500; Hardcover, PhP800

Both have covers illustrated by Leinil Francis Yu and a foreword by Mr. Neil himself.

Copies of Expeditions that will be available during the Fully Booked event on Sunday will be pre-signed by Neil.

Article: “Marvelous Maiden Voyage”

Ruel de Vera of the Philippine Daily Inquirer has an article about Expeditions, the compilation publication of the winners and the best entries from the 1st Philippine Graphic/Fiction Awards.

“There is a fine tradition of realistic fiction in Filipino literature,” Neil Gaiman explains. “We wanted to encourage unrealistic fiction.” Those words, appearing in “The Sandman” author’s Foreword, exemplify the dark heart, and considerable soul of “Expeditions: The Philippine Graphic/Fiction Awards Vol. 1―Comics” (Fully Booked, 2007, 110 pages) and “Expeditions: The Philippine Graphic Fiction Awards Vol. 1―Prose” (Fully Booked, 2007, 190 pages). And any reader will recall that Gaiman had no idea what awaited him in the Philippines: “What I knew of the Philippines could have been written on the wing of a small butterfly.”

Round-up of Beowulf reviews and articles

Updated: 9:00am, Nov. 22 – Thanks to Cha.

Warner Bros. Pictures, the local distributor of Beowulf, is reporting that the film has earned PhP28.9M from Nov. 14-18, PhP2.61M of that from the IMAX 3D screenings.  Details here.

Here’s a list of articles, interviews, and reviews about Beowulf from local news sites. If you know of an article that wasn’t linked here, please help me put together a more complete listing by posting in the comments. :)

“A Hero Comes Home” Lyrics

I was curious, so I searched for it. :D

Edited track listing. Thanks to Ryuujin.

~*~*~*~

“A Hero Comes Home” (Beowulf OST)
Performed by Idina Menzel

Out of the mist of history he’ll come again
Sailing on ships across the sea to a wounded nation
Signs of a savior and fire on the water
It’s what we prayed for, one of our own

Just wait though wide he may roam
Always a hero comes home
He goes where no one has gone
But always a hero comes home

Deep in the heart of darkness sparks a dream of light
Surrounded by hopelessness he finds the will to fight
There’s no surrender, always remember
It doesn’t end here, we’re not alone

Just wait though wide he may roam
Always a hero comes home
He goes where no one has gone
But always a hero comes home

And he will come back on a crimson tide
Dead or alive
And even though we know the bridge has burned
He will return… He will return!

Just wait though wide he may roam
Always a hero comes home
He knows of places unknown
But always a hero comes home

Someday he may carve his stone
The hero comes home

He goes and comes back alone
But always a hero comes home
Just wait though wide he may roam
Always a hero comes home.

Curiouser and curiouser. I searched for the track listing next. :D … continue reading this entry.

In Which Mr. Neil Finds Me and I Talk Beowulf

Mr. Neil finally found this blog. Finally. I confess I’ve written him a couple of times telling him about this site and that the folks from the Philippines can come and find info about his visit here. But I guess it must’ve been buried beneath tons of other mail.

Thank you, Google! And thank you, Mr. Neil, for the link. :) Have a pleasant journey here!

Gary and I went to see Beowulf on IMAX last Sunday. I’m one of those countless people who have had to read Beowulf back in my school days. I’ve forgotten most of it except for Grendel and the dragon and a fleeting image of Grendel’s mother, which I’m sure looked nothing like Angelina Jolie. :S I shared my thoughts on the film here.

~*~*~*~

Beowulf is doing well in the U.S. and has managed to topple The Bee Movie from the #1 spot.
